The best thing that can be said about the Falcons 2007
campaign is that its finally over. They started the season
battling star quarterback Michael Vick's conviction on
dog fighting charges just weeks after trading promising
backup Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans. If that weren't
bad enough, the season ended with turncoat Bobby Petrino
abandoning the team with three games remaining in the
season to become the new head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Secondary coach Emmitt Thomas was named interim coach
for these final contests. The offseason saw sweeping change,
bringing in the New England Patriots head of college scouting,
Thomas Dimitroff, to man the post of General Manager and
signing on Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator
Mike Smith to be the new coach. They've release oft-injured
stars Alge Crumpler and Rod Coleman to free up cap room
in order to be aggressive in free agency. With the number
three pick in the 2008 draft, the Falcons will look to
rebuild the ailing franchise.
